Because EMSC and USGS don't post earthquakes in Iceland it is easy to forget that Iceland has an ongoing volcano eruption since this past May, the 5th in the region since December 2023 .Lava there is posing a threat to buildings and more . Measures are being taken to try to prevent Lava from reaching the Svartsengi Power Plant . Lava there has covered roads and is threatening Grindavik and other areas.
Steps being taken are trying to cool lava using water from firetrucks which requires a lot of water, constructing barriers at least 26 feet high around the power plant . The aim is to halt the progress of the lava towards the power plant and facilities . The barriers will take up to two weeks to build . The barriers will be paid for through a tax on property owners .
Meanwhile scientists are trying to harness the energy beneath volcanoes in Iceland ,they are calling it green power .
